learn something new everyday - march 2010

3.22.10:  Foie Gras is absolutely delicious.
3.19.10:  People like structure.  I was told when I was offered a job that I have substance, but not form.
3.13.10:  No matter how sure I am about someone, I think I need to know someone and live with them for at least one year before getting engaged.  I've seen too many head-over-heals marriages that leave someone in the marriage feeling a bit underwhelmed.
3.12.10:  I try not to listen to what other people say about other people, but sometimes they're right.
3.11.10:  Concept development might be the toughest part of Marketing.
3.10.10:  As you increase trial, you have to invest in your base business as well to continue to grow household penetration.
3.9.10:  When you lose a lot of fluids, you should drink Pedialyte. The best flavor to buy is Orange.  Grape is okay, but Cherry (the flavor I bought) is terrible.
3.8.10:  P&G launches 3,000 initiatives per year.
3.7.10:  European companies are shipping to online shoppers in the U.S. at lower prices.  They're willing to take lower margins on products than U.S. companies, even absorbing the costs of shipping overseas.
3.6.10:  People don't build relationships with their real estate agents like they used to.
3.5.10:  I think the only reason I did so well today was because I didn't want to let Mister Griffith down after all of his help preparing.
3.4.10:  I want to be a "Destination Manager" when I grow up.
3.3.10:  Days like this aren't worth it unless you love your job the other 364 days out of the year.  Thankfully I do.
3.2.10:  Superbowl commercials drive awareness for brands that have strong equity, but they do little to communicate benefits.  Still trying to understand what value they actually have.  I think our P&G Olympic "Thanks Mom" campaign is doing a ton more for us than a Superbowl commercial ever would.
3.1.10:  I don't think I should do my taxes before March.

i want to thank you for giving me the best day of my life - march 2010

3.13.10:  3 more quarters - I survived 7, just 8, 9 and 10 to go.
3.12.10:  Spring weather - So my furnace is officially broken and turning it on is a fire hazard, so I'm so incredibly thankful its warming up, and I don't need to turn on the heat.
3.11.10: Good friends - School has forced me to only keep people in my life that are truly good friends - people who I admire, who inspire me, who challenge me, who interest me, who make me want to be a better person, who make me laugh, who tell me I'm wrong when I'm wrong, who open my eyes.  There's absolutely no reason why I'd ever waste my time with someone who I didn't share the same ethical values, someone who makes me feel bad about myself, someone who is always more important than me.
3.10.10:  Household Care - The training in HHC is better than any other GBU.
3.9.10:  My Mom - When I'm sick, the first thing I do is call my mom, and she always, always knows what to do and makes me feel better.
3.8.10:  Series of Sprints, not a Marathon - Relief came today.
3.7.10:  Running - I love running.  It felt so good to be back out there today.  I need this back in my life.
3.6.10:  End of the quarter - The quarter is almost over.  If I made it through this one, I can make it through the rest of the year.
3.5.10:  Griffith - He's taught me so much and inspires me everyday.
3.4.10:  The Puffs Team - Having an awesome team makes the world of difference.
3.3.10:  Griffith - He was right there beside me the whole time.
3.2.10:  OOO by 5:45 - I needed to leave early today to finish my paper, and I did!  It felt so good to get out of the office at a reasonable office.
3.1.10:  Loving myself - I love who I am today.  Four years ago, I couldn't have said that honestly.

the best part of waking up - march 2010

3.13.10:  Enjoying lunch with Ben discussing Marketing, the print media industry and life.  And meeting his unbelievably beautiful wife as well!
3.12.10:  Bothering Mister Griffith about what's next in his life.  He's honestly one of the two best ABMs I've ever seen after working with probably 50 in my career.
3.11.10:  Meeting up with Amanda for the first time since November.  It had been way too long.  Amanda has been my inspiration for the last five years of my life.  She is an absolutely incredible person.
3.10.10:  Taking a walk with Lincoln and CLigz.  Also, trying to convince Griffith he should join us.  Ha.  His response was simply that turning down the offer for a walk was one of the easiest decisions he's made all day.
3.9.10:  Sleeping because if I am sleeping that means I'm not throwing up.
3.8.10:  Finding my digital camera!
3.7.10:  Watching Sandra Bullock thank her mom, Helgibe, "for making me practice every day when I got home, piano, ballet whatever it is I wanted to be.  She said to be an artist, you had to practice every day.  And for reminding her daughters that there is no race, no religion, no class system, no color, nothing, no sexual orientation, that makes us better than anyone else.  We are all deserving of love."
3.6.10:  Doing jager bombs with the Michigan boys at break.
3.5.10:  Being "well prepared, very poisted, and communicated very clearly" for the most important meeting in my career so far.  Crazy that I was fumbling through words just 20 min prior as we practiced our final run through.  Seeing Olivia Grace was definitely a highlight as well!
3.4.10:  Feeling incredibly inspired by Mautz.  I think I'm doing some things right. =)
3.3.10:  Knowing that Matt had my back today.
3.2.10:  Bringing Christine a singing birthday balloon to make her smile.
3.1.10:  Working through Cascading Choices with Mister Griffith.

the best part of waking up - february 2010

2.28.10:  Finding the perfect plans for Alexa's bachelorette party.
2.27.10:  Sleeping for a solid five hours in the van.  It's so sad that the van has turned into my best sleep of the week.
2.26.10:  Having a sleepover at Kreena's!
2.25.10:  Showing Delta to all the people who have worked so hard to make it happen.
2.24.10:  Sending the Business Review out...finally
2.23.10:  Jerry asking me to dinner to meet his family.  I've loved working with him, and I'm so happy to know that I've made an impact on him as he has on me.  This is the best part about work.
2.22.10:  Helping Alexa pick out her song for her first dance with Tom.
2.21.10:  Booking our trip to India!
2.20.10:  Chatting with John for the first time in a long time.
2.19.10:  Talking with Emily about her flights to India.  I am so so excited!
2.18.10:  Getting the call from Martin about his new job on Bounty!
2.17.10:  Receiving Alexa's present in the mail. I think it might just be the best present I've ever gotten anyone.
2.16.10:  Catching up with Mitchell.  It's been way too long.  He and Tim are two of my longest friends and people I admire so much.  Although we don't talk that often, we always pick up right where we left off.
2.15.10:  Laughing with Alexa while I'm trying to carry way too much out the door.  I don't like when I have to leave her place.
2.14.10:  Reading Alexa's Valentine's Day Card.  Every card she writes me I'm almost in tears or I'm bawling.
2.13.10:  Watching the Blackhawks win.  I love the fact that I enjoy hockey.
2.12.10:  Talking to Dean Krueger about starting my scholarship at Kellogg!
2.11.10:  Being giggly all day.  I'm not sure what was wrong with me.  I think Mister Griffith thought I was drunk or sleep deprived...maybe both.
2.10.10:  Walking in a winter wonderland.  Sometimes ridiculous snow storms are just fun, especially watching how Cincinnatians react during the "blizzards" of 2-3 inches of snow.
2.9.10:  Picking out our India trip with Emily!
2.8.10:  Seeing for the first time in my life an executive at P&G with a great family.
2.7.10:  Finding the perfect present for Alexa.
2.6.10:  Reading the text Alexa sent me about being the best friend she could ask for.
2.5.10:  Receiving the really nice note from Stef for sending cookies to the plant.  Sometimes personally investing a little, makes the world of difference.
2.4.10:  Congratulating Emily on getting into Kellogg!  I was the first person she called at P&G, and I'm just so proud of her.  I knew after our first conversation that she would definitely get in.  I've now successfully helped 4 for 4 people get into Kellogg!
2.3.10:  Trying to get Mister Griffith to sing a lullaby.
2.2.10:  Figuring out that the sunshine room was so hot because C-Ligz turned the heat up to 80 degrees.
2.1.10:  Getting excited about India with my little sister!

i want to thank you for giving me the best day of my life - february 2010

2.28.10:  Better flight times - I changed my flights to India. For just $50 more, I have much better times.  I leave 4 hours later from CVG, and I come home 6 hours earlier.  Love it.
2.27.10:  Standing up for what I believe in - I've gotten past the point of being too afraid of not pleasing everyone.  Anything I say to someone, I'd stand behind in any situation.
2.26.10:  The Oakley Post Office - I'm always running late, but somehow they always let me mail that day.
2.25.10:  HR Block - They actually fixed the system based on my feedback!  Good customer service.
2.24.10:  Business Review - It's done, and surprisingly it's incredibly useful as we plan for 10/11 and 11/12.
2.23.10:  Canceled dinner tomorrow - I would have felt bad canceling, but thankfully I was canceled on instead!
2.22.10:  My work plan - I think I have the best work plan of any junior ABM.  I love leading eCommerce and all the other things as well.
2.21.10:  Vacations - I am so lucky I can afford to travel the way I do.
2.20.10:  Being able to survive on little sleep - I know it's not good for me, and I was doing really good in the beginning of the year, but I'm glad that I can get by if I need to on only a few hours of sleep.  It'll get back to normal once I make it to March 5th.
2.19.10:  Making progress - Finally it's coming together and it feels good.
2.18.10:  Brase - I really don't like the idea of scheduled lunches with Brase, but once we got past the normal "how's everything going?" and "what can I do to help you?" and started talking about acting like kids, it was actually a fun conversation.  I like that he's down to earth and his family is so important to him.
2.17.10:  Finishing my midterm in time - Thankfully I know a little bit about pricing from what I do on a normal basis.
2.16.10:  Global calls - Although I hate waking up for 7 am calls, I love learning from around the world.
2.15.10:  Wendy - She helped me clean off my car from the 6 inches of snow even though she could have just left me!
2.14.10:  Alexa - I think I've written her name down a lot in these, but I am so thankful everyday that I have her as my best friend.
2.13.10:  Mike - Letting me shower and hang out before the game.
2.12.10:  Luck - I'm so glad I looked at my syllabus tonight one last time.  Otherwise, we definitely wouldn't have submitted our assignment for tomorrow.
2.11.10:  Mister Griffith - For keeping things fun and hanging in there.
2.10.10:  Kreena - Thankfully we're using her project idea.  She saved us.
2.9.10:  Making it up Center Hill - I made it up, slowly but surely, whereas some cars definitely couldn't.
2.8.10:  Buffer zone in my fuel tank gage - I was definitely driving on 0 gallons for at least 30 minutes today.  I'm so happy I found a station with diesel before my car died.
2.7.10:  10% off my new iPod - For recycling your old iPod, you automatically get 10% off a new one!
2.6.10:  Surviving the drive safely - Every year there is one day of terrible snow to Chicago.  It took us 7 hours to get to school, which really wasn't so bad considering the first 100 miles our we were on top of an inch of packed down snow, and the flurries were so bad you could barely see 10 feet in front of you.  Thankfully, we all made it home safely.  Last year they had a bad accident where a truck spun across the median and split the van down the middle.
2.5.10:  Eating lunch out - We eat at our desks way too often, and I'm so glad Brad asked me to get out and eat at Motel Mexican.
2.4.10:  Kirsten - Our project NPV is paying out!
2.3.10:  Christine - My saving grace throughout the day is Christine.  I think I've also been pretty moody and not fun lately, so I'm thankful she puts up with me.
2.2.10:  My new office - So until the 22nd, I'll be huddle hiding in my sunshine room to maximize my productiveness.
2.1.10:  Matt's message introducing Grace Olivia - I am so incredibly happy that both Laura and Grace are healthy.  I didn't stop worrying all weekend because I was sure that the only reason we hadn't heard anything was that something was wrong.

learn something new everyday - february 2010

2.28.10:  Some people just don't want it to be better for anyone else.
2.27.10:  People are generally unreliable.
2.26.10:  Alexa has made such an impact on so many lives over the past year, in ways she would've never imagined.
2.25.10:  I need to stop being late.  Seriously.
2.24.10:  It doesn't feel quite the same if you jump right into something else and never get the chance to celebrate.
2.23.10:  When you invite others to join, suddenly you can't have everything your way.
2.22.10:  India won't let you in the country if your passport expires within six months.
2.21.10:  So many people at P&G have so many incredible talents.
2.20.10:  The best time to take GIM is as one of your DEP classes.
2.19.10:  People don't celebrate enough.  Every good thing should be celebrated.  I mean, why not?
2.18.10:  Sending a little something unexpected can really make a difference.  Also, people in other countries tend to be much more thankful than people here.
2.17.10:  Prescription generics can often pick up as much as 50% share in the first year.
2.16.10:  A simple apology makes everything okay.  I'm glad that I can forgive easily.
2.15.10:  People who are accountable are really hard to find, especially in a roommate.
2.14.10:  There are a ton of really good Asian groceries outside of Chinatown in Chicago.
2.13.10:  What professors share in slides is never really the true story.
2.12.10:  Starting a scholarship is the best motivation I have for graduating now.
2.11.10:  If there's no strategy, people will go off and create their own.
2.10.10:  IP address targeting is only ~50% accurate according to Weather.com, due to the off-site location of servers.
2.9.10:  Standards of Excellence are an easy way to communicate what you stand for among consumers.
2.8.10:  □ $ % =) <3
2.7.10:  I can't live without my iPod....sad, I never thought I'd become one of those people.
2.6.10:  When you're negotiating, ask explicitly how much it's worth to the other person.
2.5.10:  Only make a proposal if it's really going to make things different.
2.4.10:  I can sleep straight through the loudest alarm possible.
2.3.10:  When you invest in high ratings programming, your overdelivery is likely to be much lower.
2.2.10:  An easy way to eat a mango is to cut off a slice and make cross-hatched slits, then eat the fruit off the skin.
2.1.10:  Babies have a dark glaze over their eyes for the first few weeks.

i want to thank you for giving me the best day of my life - january 2010

1.31.10:  Sunshine on my one day off a week - I love the sunshine, and I definitely don't get enough of it since I'm at work all day Monday through Friday, then also spend my Saturdays sitting in a classroom and on the van.  The chances of sunshine on a Sunday in Cincinnati aren't very high, so it's incredible when the sun shines like it did today.
1.30.10:  Leslie - I wish I could climb with her tomorrow.
1.29.10:  Alexa - She always makes me laugh.  Alexa has grown so much in the past few years, and I'm really proud of her for handling the Kelley situation so well and finding the humor in a kind of scary (Single White Female scary) situation.
1.28.10:  Michael - Of the past five years that I've known Mike, I think he's only opened up to me once before tonight.  I'm really glad we talked tonight.  I learned more about him than I probably have ever known.
1.27.10:  Alexa - I'm so glad that she's my best friend and that she's not like most other girls.  She's such a good person, and she works so hard at constantly becoming better.
1.26.10:  Kreena - She always does a great job of managing our calls.
1.25.10:  Michael - We've always had a great time together over the last years as friends of our best friends, Tom and Alexa.
1.24.10:  Meghan - I'm really excited to read in her wedding!!!
1.23.10:  The Kellogg Marketing Conference - What an awesome conference.  I learned so much today, and met some incredible people as well as catching up with some old friends.
1.22.10:  Martin - I absolutely would not have been able to drive to Chicago today.  Thankfully, I rode up with Martin.
1.21.10:  Vicky - She made me feel okay today.
1.20.10:  Catching a break - The overnight shipping was 15 minutes late, so I was able to ship to Target just in time.
1.19.10:  Mister Griffith - He's going to make the transition from Laura seamless, hopefully, not at the expense of himself though.
1.18.10:  Passionate people - The people who work at Wheelie Fun are so passionate about what they do.  It's incredible to work during the day on something that they love so much.
1.17.10:  Three day weekends - So I've worked all day today, but it doesn't feel so bad because I have tomorrow off to do my homework, more work work and run errands.
1.16.10:  Good beer - I'm glad I actually like good beer.  Smithwick's is exactly what I needed tonight.
1.15.10:  Kevin's love for food and cooking - I definitely reap the benefits.
1.14.10:  Sleep - I decided to not stay up all night, and I slept for a few hours instead.
1.13.10:  Mentoring - I've had wonderful mentors throughout my career, and I hope I am being a just as wonderful mentor for my mentees.
1.12.10:  Having a good life - I am very lucky to be employed with a great job and living the way I do, particularly with all of my travel.
1.11.10:  Jerry - He is my hero.
1.10.10:  Flirting - A cute boy at the gym and another very cute boy at the wine shop reminded me that there's still hope for me even though I am undatable at the moment.
1.9.10:  Commitment - I'm pretty sure the only reason I'm going to finish school at this point is that I'm committed.
1.8.10:  Mom & Dad - They consistently remind me of the need for balance in life and all the wonderful experiences I've had.
1.7.10:  Karl - What an incredible and inspiring person.  I hope that Karl finds all that he is looking for in this world.
1.6.10:  Mister Griffith - He is going to make a fabulous Brand Manager.  I think the Business will do just as well under his lead when Laura goes on maternity leave.
1.5.10:  The Oakley Post Office - They let me slip in a minute after closing, and I was able to pack Emily's birthday present outside for an extra 15 minutes.
1.4.10:  CLigz - Christine is the one person who got me through the day.
1.3.10:  Going to bed early last night - Sometimes the FOMO makes us make poor decisions.  I definitely made the right one.  I would have never survived today otherwise.
1.2.10:  Breaks - Today was a break from life.  I woke up at 9:30, ate Dim Sum, wandered around SoHo and Nolita, relaxed with my brother, and didn't once think about work or school or anything but what I was doing at the time.
1.1.10:  Jon - I love my big brudder.  He's an incredibly interesting person with an incredible and interesting life with incredible and interesting friends.  Today, I joined him and his friends for the Polar Bear Swim and New Yangs Day, a second serving of Yangsgiving.

learn something new everyday - january 2010

1.31.10:  I accomplish a lot more if I can get myself to d a little schoolwork in the mornings on Sundays, then work out, and then run errands.
1.30.10:  Sometimes you need small tangible wins before creating a strategy that people cannot envision.
1.29.10:  Big Lots! not only has the remnant price discounts, then they discount across the store another 20-30 percent.
1.28.10:  Sometimes persistence is the only way you'll get what you want.  Sometimes people just need to know that you're committed to open up.
1.27.10:  Creating organic growth is extremely difficult in a 173 year old company with $80 billion in annual sales.
1.26.10:  I eat when I PMS.  Yes, it took me until the age of 25 to figure this out.
1.25.10:  By getting less than 5 hours of sleep on a regular basis, people are 450% more likely to heart disease than those who get 7 or more hours of sleep each night.  Too little sleep creates a buildup of calcium in the arteries of the heart.
1.24.10:  A 529 is not an Education IRA, and you cannot contribute to both in the same year.  529's only allow you to invest in mutual funds, but withdrawals are completely tax free.
1.23.10:  P&G can't offer employment for life, but they offer employability for life.
1.22.10:  Saying thank you in small ways is one of the best and easiest things I can do.
1.21.10:  It took me 18 months to get a raise even though I got promoted.  My fellow peer is here for 6 months, and he got a raise, and he already makes quite a bit more than me because he's on the MBA curve.  I just have to remind myself the hard work pays off someday, right?  Please tell me the countless sleepless nights are worth it.
1.20.10:  I'm a stress eater.
1.19.10:  Google has grown to have a larger market cap in its 12-year existence than P&G has developed in 173 years.  We're the 15th largest company in the world, and Google has us beat in shareholder value.
1.18.10:  I can grocery shop under $50 if I'm really conscious.
1.17.10:  When I meet the boy who is the nicest person I've ever met, I think I'll marry him.
1.16.10:  When making a negotiation, it's better to negotiate the entire package than on individual items.
1.15.10:  Customer calls are the absolute best way to see how much you actually know.
1.14.10:  The average annual salary in Haiti is $400, and 80% of the Haitian populations lives in poverty.
1.13.10:  We manage consumer reviews just as much as the average company.  We're surprisingly lenient, and only remove a comment if someone uses offensive language or offers a recommendation that could be harmful to other consumers.
1.12.10:  Pipes burst from the excess pressure from expansion during freezing.  Never completely turn off the heat when it is below 20 degrees.
1.11.10:  Many bank executives still got major bonuses this year, but would not have received anything without our government bailouts.  If we could eliminate selfishness in this world, what would life be like?  Would we all be equally starving and unmotivated?  Or would we simply all be happy?
1.10.10:  Flights to Lima, Peru are $350 from CVG.
1.9.10:  The Wright Brothers figured out how to fly by laying on the beach watching birds fly overhead.
1.8.10:  When your main competitor has enough equity in their brand to not use their logo in their next initiative, you know you're in trouble.
1.7.10:  Texas has an outstanding football program.
1.6.10:  Agencies need extremely detailed direction.
1.5.10:  Weather patterns tend to move from West to East in the U.S. because the sun heats the highest at the equator and winds travel from South to North to provide cooling, but as the earth spins, the winds move from the West to East instead.
1.4.10:  Coming back to work after the holidays gets harder every year, especially if you never really take a break.
1.3.10:  The shape of a decanter does not affect is performance.
1.2.10:  My brother owns a $2,000 per of shoes.
1.1.10:  Creatives tend to make for much more interesting conversations than corporate people, except for the crazy ones - crazy in a good way.

the best part of waking up - january 2010

1.31.10:  Starting to plan Alexa's bachelorette party!
1.30.10:  Talking with Jonathan today in Negotiations.
1.29.10:  Eating pomegranate Yagoot while chatting with Tonia and Adam.
1.28.10:  Realizing there's been a lot of "best parts" of my day lately.  Inspiring potential students to be excited about Kellogg.  Eating Korean with Kreena.   Talking with Mike and getting to really know him more.
1.27.10:  Having a great conversation with Brase.  Also indulging in Southern deliciousness with Christine, who was drunk without alcohol.  And laughing with Alexa about the ridiculousness of it all.
1.26.10:  Bringing Sofia her laptop cord and seeing how thankful she was.  She gave me three hugs!
1.25.10:  Riding my shiny new road bike.
1.24.10:  Waking up early and crawling into bed with Tom and Alexa.  I was laughing so hard and trying to hide under the covers when they called Mike.   It's ridiculous (in a good way) the stuff that Tom says to embarrass me all the time.
1.23.10:  Making the day for the old man who sat next to me on the L.  He looked like he was ready to fall apart, or worse, and by the end of our conversation he couldn't stop smiling and saying, "God bless you."
1.22.10:  Watching Conan's last show.
1.21.10:  Getting kudos from Brad on my response to OfficeMax.
1.20.10:  Realizing how much I'm going to miss Laura.  I am truly a marketer because of her.
1.19.10:  Bowling in the bullpen for the Fine Arts Fund.  Seeing Karl put on the women's Puffs fleece that was tight as can be made the bowling that much more fun.
1.18.10:  Buying my first road bike!
1.17.10:  Catching up with Christopher.  It had been way too long.
1.16.10:  Revealing to Kreena that I thought about sticking my finger in her nose, and then she revealed she had been thinking about flicking my face at the same time!
1.15.10:  Listening to Laura list off the things I'm not allowed to do while she's gone on maternity leave, i.e. no building castles that are fire hazards, no vandalizing cars, no cooking bacon in the office, no standing in shopping carts and breaking them, overall, no getting in trouble with safety.
1.14.10:  Trying to hide in a huddle to be productive, but everyone managed to find me anyways to ask for whatever they need.
1.13.10:  Working at Christine's desk and bothering Patrick.
